Asthma and Physical Education

Asthma and Physical Education

Asthma varies from student to student and often season to season. However, with the right medication regiment asthmatic kids can fully participate in physical activities most of the time. This is why it is so important for PE coaches and teachers to know and understand asthma warning signs and triggers. Children with asthma should not be left behind because of their asthmatic status. Here are some simple steps to help ensure you provide a safe playing environment.

1. Have a written Asthma Action Plan on file at school

2. Medication access

3. Recognize asthma warning signs and triggers

4. Know what to do in case of an asthma-related emergency

5. Modify exercises, if needed, according to asthmatic child

6. Allow for proper warm up and cool down periods
