Tips for Coaches

Coaches should be especially aware of asthma and how to handle the condition with their athletes. Follow these guidelines to manage asthma with your team:

Asthma Action Plan

Keep an Asthma Action Plan handy for each child in P.E. class and at practice, games, or competitions. Make sure it’s in a convenient spot where you can easily find it in case of an emergency.

Whether you coach at a school or in a league outside of school, be sure you know the organization’s most up to date asthma policies and procedures.

Establish protocol with the child and parents ahead of time for missed practice, games, or class due to asthma.

Asthma-Friendly Activities

Plan activities that are asthma-friendly or have variations or alternatives ready to go for the kids with asthma.

Pre-medication Needs

Be aware of any pre-medication needs before exercise.

Quick Relief Medicines

Have access to asthma medicines at all times, especially during functions away from school or after school hours.

Warning Signs

Be aware of asthma attack warning signs, as well as signs of uncontrolled asthma.

Team Effort

Communicate openly with parents, teachers, the school nurse, and administrators in order to effectively manage your athletes’ asthma.

Warm-Up and Cool-Down

Remember warm-up and cool-down activities before and after strenuous exercise.

In Case of Emergency

Establish a plan ahead of time with the athlete’s parents to respond in case of an asthma-related emergency.

Encourage participation but understand and respect the limits of children with asthma.

Respond to Uncontrolled Asthma

Alert the school nurse, an administrator and/or the child’s parent if asthma symptoms seem out of control. Symptoms may include a lingering/persistent cough or wheezing during the day, low stamina during physical activity, or increased use of asthma medication.
